Platte De Alton Lyman was born in 1848 near Fort Laramie, now Wyoming, and was baptized in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints as a child. He served as a missionary in England and held Church offices in Millard County, Utah, during 1867-1877. In 1879 he assisted Silas S. Smith in colonization of San Juan County, Utah, where he lived through 1884.
